About Michael Kittredge and Yankee Candles:
1969:
Michael Kittredge II, a 16-year-old from Holyoke, Massachusetts, made a candle for his mother using melted crayons. A neighbor was so impressed that she asked him to make one for her as well.
Early 1970s:
With the money from the initial sale, Kittredge bought more wax and started producing candles in larger quantities. He initially operated the business from his family's garage.
Late 1970s:
Yankee Candle began to expand, with its first retail store opening in South Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1975.
1980s and Beyond:
The company continued to grow, expanding its product line and retail footprint. By 1997, Yankee Candle had annual sales of $150 million and had become a major tourist attraction with its flagship store in South Deerfield, Massachusetts.
1998:
Michael Kittredge II sold 90% of Yankee Candle to Forstmann Little & Co. for about $500 million.
Later Years:
Kittredge continued to be involved with the company and its foundation, and he also supported the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and other charitable organizations. He was diagnosed with cancer in the early 1990s and began delegating responsibility for the company's operations.

Michael Kittredge II passed away at the age of 67.
